Unusually for Fontane it is set in the early part of the seventeenth century and was a side project from his Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg , at the time of the celebration of the national, Fontane was looking to the local, to the small stories like this one from an old chronicle as the subtitle says about the daughter of a Patrician who started a fire that largely destroyed her native town in The historical setting is dealt with fairly lightly, without much detail.
There is some Platt low German, as opposed to the high German which is taught in schools at home and abroad as Fontane uses language to distinguish between the Hochdeutsch speaking townspeople and Plattschnackerig country people.
It is a quick moving little tale and in common with Fontane's other fiction character is conveyed through speech - what people say and how they say it.

In this case the titular Grete Minde becomes an arsonist not because of wickedness or bad character, but out of aspects of her character that generally one might think of as positive: a desire for love, and an inability to tolerate injustice a mixture which in reaction to the characters of others turns out to be explosive, it is a little like the story of Michael Kohlhaas in this respect.
I liked to the depiction of the difference between the ways that Grete and Valtin love each other, it just quite small and shown in their dialogue, but such nice observations are the joy of reading Fontane.
